Pasadena, CA

The City of Pasadena is located 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Pasadena is unique in that it is home to 16 historically designated districts, such as the Playhouse District, Bungalow Heaven and Garfield Heights. Today, at least 10 percent of the city’s 22.5 square-mile area is historically designated.

THE DISTRICTS

Old Pasadena is nationally recognized for its vibrant main street revitalization. Spanning 22 blocks of historic streets and alleyways, Old Pasadena reflects the traditions of early California, blending more than 200 retail stores, art galleries, trendy boutiques, vintage
clothing stores, theaters and restaurants.

European ambiance is most evident along the 10 tree-lined blocks of South Lake Avenue, which is home to upscale boutiques, designer stores and eateries. This active business community and bustling retail center features Macy’s and The Commons, alongside
diverse eateries such as The Arbour and Pie ‘n Burger, a Pasadena institution since 1963.

The Pasadena Playhouse District is an eclectic mix of art, theatre and literature, all enhanced with 1920s architecture. At its center is the Pasadena Playhouse, the official State Theatre of California and a national historic landmark. Built in 1917, the Spanish-style building is known for its cutting-edge productions. Visit Vroman’s Bookstore, the oldest independent bookstore in Southern California, or stop in and smell the roses at Jacob Maarse, one of the area’s premier florists. Witness a creatively daring presentation of drama and music in one of the intimate, state-of-the-art settings at Boston Court Theatre, known for its special emphasis on nurturing new talent.

THINGS TO DO

Blending historic and contemporary architecture, One Colorado is a single city block bursting with abundant shopping, dining and entertainment options. One of the city’s most popular gathering spots, One Colorado features eight restaurants, 29 unique one-of-a-kind retail shops, and endless entertainment, with outdoor film festivals, live music, art installations and children’s arts and crafts.

  • The Paseo spans three city blocks at the heart of Pasadena’s downtown Civic Center. It is a bustling open-air urban village with lush promenades, 60 street-front retail shops and an impressive collection of acclaimed restaurants.

  • Pasadena Antique Center is known as “antique collector’s heaven,” with more than 130 eclectic stores carrying antiques from all periods and styles.

  • The Rose Bowl Flea Market, “the granddaddy of all flea markets,” is located at the Rose Bowl Stadium, northwest of downtown Pasadena. Held the second Sunday of every month, the flea market attracts more than 2,200 vendors with over a million items for sale, ranging from household necessities to fine antiques…a treasure hunter’s dream.

Beware of pirates and poachers!

SPFA contracts for blocks of hotel rooms at discounted rates for the benefit of our attendees. Pirates and poachers not only jeopardize the show’s ability to meet its obligations, but also place attendees in danger of increased fees, credit card theft and phony reservations, resulting in no hotel room at all!

PIRATE: A fictitious business, often with a name like “Convention Housing Services.” A pirate will contact faculty, exhibitors or potential attendees. The pirate claims to be working with the show and will pressure you to reserve and pay for a hotel room immediately due to low inventory. They charge your credit card and also collect the information for future use but no hotel rooms are reserved.
POACHER: Hotel poachers, also known as third-party room-block marketing firms, often present themselves as either the official housing agency for a conference or authorized by it to book hotel reservations. A poacher offers hotel rooms outside of the show’s contracted block.

REMEMBER: SPFA WILL NOT TELEPHONE INDIVIDUALS REGARDING THE PURCHASE OF HOTEL RESERVATIONS.

PIRATES and POACHERS often misrepresent themselves by illegally using our logo.
